4 - What is a cookie or similar technology?
A cookie is a data file stored by a website or an app on your IT equipment such as your computer, tablet or smartphone. The purpose is to recognise the IT equipment to secure login but also to monitor your use of the website or the app.
Since the introduction of cookies more than 20 years ago, a large number of other similar technical solutions have appeared which have more or less the same functionalities; for example, apps can store data in local storage and websites in Local Storage (HTML5) and use this to recognise the IT equipment. Unique identifiers such as MAC address, installation IDs and other information about your IT equipment can also be used for the same purpose.
Today almost all websites and apps use cookies or similar technology. This is often necessary to be able to provide a satisfactory service, for example to secure login or remember settings.
A cookie or similar technology cannot see who you are, what your name is, where you live or whether the computer has one or multiple users. Nor can it spread viruses or other types of malware.
Some cookies or similar technologies are stored on your computer only while your browser is open; such cookies are called session cookies. Other cookies or similar technologies are stored on your IT equipment for a longer period of time; such cookies are called persistent cookies. When you return to a website, the cookie will automatically be renewed.
Cookies from parties other than the party who owns the website (third party cookies) are often stored. The contents of such cookies may be of a general nature, but they may also be analytical tools and embedded commentaries.
